IND vs SL 2024 T20i Series: Key Players battle to watch Out

Sri Lanka are gearing up to host India in a three-match T20i series, starting from July 27, 2024.  Having clinched the T20 world Cup 2024 title, the Men in Blue would be high on confidence and would like to extend their sensational run. On the other hand, SL would want to seek redemption in the 20-over format after poor performance in T20 World Cup 2024. Here are the IND vs SL player battles to watch out for T20i series:

1. Shubman Gill vs Mathisha Pathirana

Shubman Gill is going to be vice captain for the Sri Lanka tour. Shubman Gill also made his T20i debut on 3 rd January against Sri Lanka. In his debut match he scored only 7 runs on just 5 balls. But in the 3rd T20i he scored 46 in 36 balls. He played only 3 matches against Sri Lanka where he scored 58 runs.

Mathisha Pathirana impressed everyone in this IPL 2024 season for Chennai Super Kings. He was among the top wicket takers in the whole tournament. He did not play any match against India in T20i. This IND vs SL T20i series is going to be debut for him. He played a total 9 T20i matches where got 14 wickets with economy 8.05.

The Shubman Gill vs. Pathirana battle will be exciting to watch. Although this will be their first meeting at the international level, they have faced each other before in the IPL. In the IPL 2022 season, Pathirana dismissed Shubman Gill on 18 runs during the CSK vs. GT match.

2. Mohammad Siraj vs Pathum Nissanka

Mohammad has been a nightmare for Sri Lanka for the last few years. In Asia Cup 2023, Siraj crushed Sri Lanka single handedly by taking 6 wickets in just 7 overs. In the same match he took 4 four wickets in an over. Siraj has only played 2 T20i against Sri Lanka where he took  wickets with economy rate 8.37.

Pathum Nissanka becomes a very aggressive player when facing India. His stats in T20Is against India are quite impressive. He has played a total of 8 T20 matches against them, scoring 177 runs at an average of 25.28 and a strike rate of 113.46, including 2 fifties with a highest score of 75.

The match-up between Siraj and Nissanka will be intriguing, though they haven’t faced each other before. This will be the first time they compete against each other if both are included in the playing XI. Siraj will open the bowling, while Nissanka will open the batting for their respective teams so there is a high chance to see the players battle.

3. Suryakumar Yadav vs Wanindu Hasaranga

Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav is known for his T20 skills, and his record against Sri Lanka is impressive. In five matches, he has scored a total of 254 runs with an average of 63.05, a strike rate of 160, and a highest score of 112*. His performance suggests he will be a significant challenge for Sri Lanka’s bowling attack.

On the other hand, Wanindu Hasaranga is a key all-rounder for Sri Lanka, renowned for his spin bowling. With various bowling techniques, he also plays for RCB in the IPL, giving him experience against Indian batsmen. Hasaranga’s stats against India are notable; in 10 matches and 9 innings, he has taken 13 wickets with an economy rate of 7.48 and his best bowling figures are 4/9. These stats indicate he could make a big impact in the IND vs SL 2024 T20I series.

Surya and Hasaranga have faced each other five times in T20Is, with Hasaranga dismissing Surya only once. Out of these five encounters, Suryakumar scored two fifties and one century. This matchup between Hasaranga and Surya is set to be very exciting.
