IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians Face a Major Setback as Key Pacer’s Out due to Injury

After Bumrah’s doubtful participation in IPL 2025, the Mumbai Indians (MI) face another major setback. Left-arm key pacer from England Reece Topley will almost miss IPL 2025 due to a groin injury during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) earlier this year. This latest loss adds to MI’s rising injury issues, leaving fans and management alike wondering how the team will put together a competitive bowling attack for the upcoming season.

Topley’s Injury Woes Continue

Reece Topley’s journey in the BPL 2025 ended abruptly when he suffered a groin injury while playing for the Sylhet Strikers. The injury was bad enough that he had to return to England midway through the tournament for additional treatment. Unfortunately, the most recent reports indicate that his rehabilitation is far from complete, he will not be available for the entire season.

Topley hasn’t played competitive cricket since his early exit from the BPL, and it appears he’ll be sidelined for the foreseeable future.

MI’s Overseas Bowling Crisis

Topley’s likely absence is a big setback for the Mumbai Indians, who are already dealing with injuries to several key overseas bowlers. Allah Ghazanfar has been ruled out of the tournament, and Lizaad Williams has also suffered an injury. With Topley likely to miss out, MI could be without the majority of their first-choice overseas bowlers, leaving their pace attack looking lean and inexperienced.

Why Topley’s Absence Hurts MI?

Mumbai Indians bought Reece Topley for ₹75 lakhs in the IPL mega auction, with high expectations for the left-arm bowler. Topley can swing the new ball in both ways. He becomes more crucial when he finds a venue like Wankhede, which provides these types of bowlers additional help.

However, Topley’s injuries were always a concern. The English bowler has rarely made it through a tournament without breaking down, and MI’s decision to sign him despite his flaws is now being questioned. While he was a low-cost option, his absence leaves a significant vacuum in MI’s bowling lineup.

With Topley likely out of the picture, Mumbai Indians’ bowling attack looks increasingly fragile. Replacing a bowler of his calibre won’t be easy.
