IPL 2025: Three Playing XI Decisions Lucknow Super Giants Must Get Right to Win

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are stepping into a new era under the leadership of Rishabh Pant. Expectations are sky-high after securing the star wicketkeeper-batter for a massive ₹27 crore in the IPL 2025 auction.
Despite making the playoffs in their first two seasons (2022 and 2023), LSG fell short in 2024, finishing sixth. With a new captain at the helm, the team will be eager to bounce back and make a serious title push. However, assembling the perfect playing XI will be crucial. As LSG prepares to kick off their campaign against Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam, they must resolve three key selection dilemmas.
1. Who Should Open the Innings?
LSG’s most significant question mark heading into IPL 2025 is their opening pair. Aiden Markram is locked in as an opener, but the second slot remains uncertain. Ideally, Mitchell Marsh would have partnered with him, but the Australian all-rounder is struggling with a back injury that forced him to withdraw from the Champions Trophy 2025. His availability for the IPL remains in doubt.
With Marsh’s participation uncertain, LSG might need to get creative. One option is Rishabh Pant himself. Though he has primarily played in the middle order throughout his career, Pant has experience as an opener. He opened for India in the 2016 U-19 World Cup and later in a T20I series against New Zealand in 2022. If LSG wants an aggressive left-right combination at the top, Pant could be an interesting choice.
Alternatively, the team might explore backup options like Arshin Kulkarni or consider a pinch-hitter to maximise the powerplay.
2. Arshin Kulkarni – The X-Factor as an Impact Player?
Speaking of Arshin Kulkarni, the 20-year-old all-rounder could play a pivotal role in LSG’s setup. He had a brief IPL debut in 2024, opening against Mumbai Indians, though it ended in disappointment with a golden duck. However, his domestic performances suggest he has the potential to be a game-changer.
Kulkarni scored 194 runs in six matches, including a fifty, in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. His form continued in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he smashed a century against Punjab and followed it up with a 90 against Vidarbha.
Given his ability to provide quick runs, LSG might use him as an Impact Player—bringing him in to accelerate the scoring when chasing a big total or when they need a momentum shift. Kulkarni could be a valuable weapon for Pant’s side if he delivers.
3. Finding the Right Balance in the Spin Attack
Spin bowling remains a concern for LSG heading into the new season. Ravi Bishnoi is undoubtedly the leader of the spin attack, but the lack of a strong supporting cast could be a problem.
Shahbaz Ahmed brings some IPL experience, but his 2024 season was forgettable—he leaked runs at an economy rate of over nine and averaged 38.57 per wicket. Meanwhile, M Siddharth is still relatively new to the IPL, having played just three matches and taken one wicket. Another option, Abdul Samad, is primarily a batting all-rounder and may not be a guaranteed starter.
Given these limitations, LSG might rely heavily on Bishnoi and Shahbaz as their two main spinners. However, if the conditions favour spin, they may need to bring in an additional slow bowler. The challenge will be finding the right balance between experience and form in their spin department.
LSG has a promising squad for IPL 2025, but their success will hinge on making the right strategic decisions. Choosing the best opening pair, utilising Arshin Kulkarni effectively, and shoring up the spin attack are three crucial areas that could define their season.
With Rishabh Pant leading the charge, LSG fans will hope this season marks the beginning of a golden era for the franchise. However, they must get their playing XI spot-on from the very first game to go all the way.
What do you think? Should Pant open the batting, or should LSG explore other options? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
