IPL 2025: Top 5 Potential Replacements for Injured Reece Topley in Mumbai Indians Squad

A significant setback hit the Mumbai Indians squad, and his key pacer, Reece Topley from England, may not be available due to injury. Jasprit Bumrah is also doubtful to participate for Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025 due to an injury during BGT in Sydney, Australia. Topley was added to the MI squad in the IPL mega auction at a base price of 75 lakhs. He is a left-arm pacer who can generate bounce, which would be a significant loss for MI. 

In these circumstances, the MI management may look for a replacement to maintain a balanced bowling attack.

1. Will O’Rourke

New Zealand’s Will O’Rourke impressed everyone with his performances in the PAK-SA-NZ Tri-Series held in Pakistan. He also played a crucial role in taking his team into the Champions Trophy 2025 final in Dubai against India.

He went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, but his T20 record suggests he could be a valuable addition that MI could consider. In his 42 T20 innings, he claimed 44 wickets at an average of 25.16. He masters generating movement with both the new and old ball while maintaining control in the middle overs, which could make him a viable choice for MI.

2. Ben Dwarshuis

An experienced left-arm pacer from Australia, Ben Dwarshuis replaced Mitchell Starc in the Champions Trophy 2025. He has appeared in multiple T20 leagues worldwide. Although all IPL franchises ignored him in the IPL 2025 mega auction, his impressive T20 stats make him a strong candidate that MI can consider for Toley. He has taken 179 wickets in 142 innings at an average of 23.02. He brings both wicket-taking ability and versatility in different phases of the match. His experience participating in t20 leagues across the globe makes him an ideal candidate as a replacement for Reece Topley.

3. Matthew Potts

English pacer Matthew Potts has showcased his potential in first-class cricket by playing with red ball. He also earned a place in England’s Test squad against New Zealand in 2022. However, no IPL franchise showed interest in him during the mega auction for IPL 2025. If we talk about his T20 stats, he has taken 63 wickets in 62 matches. He can restrict the opponent’s total in the powerplay with his hard-length bowl and tight lines. He is also able to break and build partnerships with his slower ones. MI always back the young pacer and produces quality bowlers, as Bumrah and Potts could be a valuable addition to their squad.

4. Nahid Rana

Bangladesh’s young pace sensation Nahid Rana has impressed cricketing experts with his raw speed, consistently clocking speeds up to 150 km/h. He showed promising performance in the Champions Trophy 2025 early in his career. MI is going to use a wildcard option for him. Rana has played 14 wickets in 17 T20 matches. Rana can potentially trouble batters with his pace, especially in the powerplay. As I said above, MI always backs young talent, especially pacer, so Rana could be the next.  

5. Tom Rogers

If you have seen the Big Bash League (BBL) this year, you might have noticed Australian fast-bowling all-rounder Tom Rogers, who has been a standout performer throughout the league. He took 76 wickets in 59 BBL matches and 79 wickets in 67 T20 matches in his overall T20 career. He has established himself as a reliable bowler in the T20 format. His ability to bat in the death overs could also provide MI with much-needed depth in the lower-order batting. 

With Reece Topley’s availability uncertain, Mumbai Indians might need to explore replacement options to strengthen their bowling unit. Each of the five players mentioned above brings a unique skill set that could complement MI’s squad.
