IPL 2025: Three Playing XI Decisions KKR Must Make to Defend Their IPL 2025 Title
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are gearing up for their title defence in IPL 2025. After retaining six key players ahead of the auction, they worked efficiently to fill the remaining gaps in their squad. While some of their acquisitions raised eyebrows due to their price tags, KKR seems content with the team they’ve assembled.
With their first game against RCB scheduled for March 22, they have just a month to finalise their best XI. Making the proper selection choices will be crucial in securing back-to-back titles. Here are three key decisions they need to make ahead of the season.
1. Quinton de Kock or Rahmanullah Gurbaz: Who Should Open?
A major question for KKR is who will partner Sunil Narine at the top of the order. Last season, Narine and Phil Salt formed a destructive opening pair, but with Salt now at RCB, KKR must choose between Quinton de Kock and Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
Both players are explosive batters, but neither has been in the best of form. De Kock struggled during the SA20 2025 season with Durban’s Super Giants, while Gurbaz had a tough time with Pretoria Capitals. However, Gurbaz has a chance to regain his rhythm in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, which could influence KKR’s decision. With the IPL starting shortly after the tournament, his performance there might tip the scales in his favour.
For those following KKR’s selection closely, keeping an eye on performance trends is essential. Many fans also use IPL betting apps real money platforms to analyse odds based on players’ form, making these selection decisions even more intriguing.
2. Angkrish Raghuvanshi vs Ajinkya Rahane: Who Deserves a Spot?
Another critical decision revolves around the middle order, where KKR must choose between young talent Angkrish Raghuvanshi and the experienced Ajinkya Rahane. Raghuvanshi played seven matches last season, scoring 163 runs while batting at various positions. Meanwhile, Rahane had a slightly better season with CSK, accumulating 242 runs in 12 games.
What makes this decision tricky is Rahane’s outstanding domestic form. He was the top scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, amassing 469 runs in nine matches, and has been in great touch in the Ranji Trophy as well. Raghuvanshi, on the other hand, has shown flashes of brilliance, including two half-centuries in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but has struggled for consistency.
Rahane’s experience and recent performances might give him the upper hand, but if KKR wants to back young talent, Raghuvanshi could still be in contention. It will be interesting to see which direction the team takes.
3. Vaibhav Arora’s Swing or Umran Malik’s Raw Pace?
KKR faces a tough choice between Vaibhav Arora and Umran Malik in the bowling department. Arora has been in good form, taking 11 wickets in 10 IPL 2024 matches and impressing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with 13 wickets in six games. Meanwhile, Malik has barely played competitive cricket since IPL 2024 and might be short on match practice.
Despite Arora’s better recent numbers, Malik’s sheer pace is a tempting option. Arora might struggle if the conditions don’t favour swing, whereas Malik’s express speed can trouble batters regardless of conditions. It’s also worth remembering that Malik had a breakout IPL season in 2022, taking 22 wickets and proving his match-winning potential. He could be a major asset for KKR’s bowling attack if he can regain that form.
Defending an IPL title is never easy, and KKR must make some bold choices to stay ahead of the competition. Their decisions regarding the opening pair, middle-order batter, and fast-bowling options will shape their campaign. With just a month to finalise their best XI, all eyes will be on KKR as they aim for another championship-winning season.
