Pat Cummins First Hat-Trick

Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins made history by taking the first hat-trick of the T20 World Cup 2024 during the Super Eight match against Bangladesh in Antigua. This incredible achievement makes Cummins only the seventh player and the second Australian to ever secure a hat-trick in a men’s T20 World Cup.

Cummins’ hat-trick played a key role in Australia’s performance. After going wicketless in his initial spell, Cummins struck in the crucial final overs of the match. His first victim was Mahmudullah, who edged a short delivery onto his stumps on the fifth ball of the 18th over. On the next ball, Cummins dismissed Mahedi Hasan, who attempted to upper-cut a delivery but ended up being caught by Adam Zampa at deep third man.

Returning to bowl the 20th over, Cummins completed his hat-trick by removing Towhid Hridoy with a slower ball that was scooped to short fine leg. This hat-trick also marked a record for Mahmudullah, who has now been part of six different hat-tricks in international cricket.

Cummins’ hat-trick, combined with Adam Zampa’s economical bowling figures of 2 for 24, helped Australia limit Bangladesh to a total of 140 for 8. In the chase, David Warner’s half-century set the tone for Australia before rain interrupted the game. Due to the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, Australia was declared the winner by 28 runs.
