IPL Updates: Potential Moves in Indian Cricket, Gambhir to Team India, Dravid Eyed by KKR

Potential Moves in Indian Cricket, Gambhir to Team India, Dravid Eyed by KKR

According to the news reports, Gautam Gambhir is likely to become Team India’s new head coach, while Rahul Dravid has been approached to mentor Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL. Gambhir, previously KKR’s mentor, was enticed by a 10-year plan from co-owner Shah Rukh Khan but ultimately chose the irresistible offer from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

With Gambhir’s move, KKR faces a significant void after winning the IPL 2024 title under his guidance. Reports suggest that KKR’s management is eyeing Rahul Dravid as a potential replacement, although formal discussions have not yet begun.

Following India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, where they defeated South Africa in the final, Rahul Dravid jokingly mentioned his impending ‘joblessness’ and invited job offers from reporters. Given Dravid’s extensive experience and talent in Indian cricket, IPL franchises are eager to enlist him.

Dravid has previously expressed a preference against continuing as India’s head coach due to extensive travel demands that keep him away from family for about 10 months annually. The shorter IPL season, requiring a commitment of only 2-3 months might better suit his preferences.

Formerly captain of India, Dravid has a history of mentoring IPL teams, including the Delhi Daredevils until 2017, when he resigned due to a ‘conflict of interest.’ He subsequently coached India’s junior teams, including Under-19 and India A, and most recently led the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru before becoming India’s head coach in 2021.
